Dental Crowns in Northeast Calgary

At Star Dental, dental crowns are used to restore and protect teeth that have been weakened by decay, fractures, or wear.

When a tooth no longer has enough structure to support a filling, a crown can provide added strength and help restore function.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made covering that fits over the visible portion of a tooth.

It is designed to restore the tooth’s shape, strength, and durability, and may also improve appearance when needed.

Crowns are commonly recommended after root canal treatment, for teeth with significant damage or decay, to replace large fillings, or as part of a dental implant. Materials are selected based on strength and how the crown will function in your bite.

When a Dental Crown May Be Recommended

A dental crown may be recommended if you have:

  • A tooth with extensive decay or weakened structure
  • A cracked, broken, or worn tooth
  • A tooth that has had root canal therapy
  • A large filling that no longer provides enough support
  • A need to restore strength or function

Each situation is evaluated to determine whether a crown is the appropriate option.

What to Expect During the Crown Process

The crown process is typically completed over two visits.

At your first appointment, the tooth is prepared by removing damaged areas and shaping it to support the crown. Impressions or digital scans are then taken to create a restoration that fits your bite. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the final crown is being made.

At your second visit, the crown is placed and adjusted for fit and alignment before being bonded in place.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

With consistent oral hygiene and routine dental visits, a crown can provide long-term function.

Daily care includes brushing and flossing around the crowned tooth to help maintain the health of the surrounding gums and teeth. Avoiding excessive pressure on the tooth, especially in the early period after placement, can also help support longevity.

Our team will provide guidance on how to care for your crown and monitor it during regular checkups.
